After many years in the IT industry, and after an excellent workshop with Andrea Edwards – The Digital Conversationalist, I have been motivated to start this blog, to share my ideas, chat about Storage in the IT industry, and comment on what’s happening in the world. Read why in “About”.
For my first post I have decided to chat about getting involved in charities…..and whilst I have often donated to many charities in the past, I have not directly participated in the various events until now. So I have signed up to Sleep at the ‘G, and I am participating in the Australian Breakthrough Cancer study.
This blog will focus on Sleep at the ‘G which happens on May 4th 2017, and I plan to follow up this blog with a conversation on the Australian Breakthrough Cancer study, which will look at how genes and lifestyle impact our risk of cancer, by looking at data provided by 50,000 Australians.
Sleep at the ‘G
Homelessness in Melbourne is an issue, and over the past 2 years I have noticed a significant increase in the number of homeless people as I walk through the streets of Melbourne, and as a resident of this great city it is not something that I am proud of.
Sleep at the ‘G is all about approximately 1,000 participants and volunteers (like myself), spending the night at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Thursday May 4th to raise $600,000 and help Melbourne City Mission support homeless young people in Victoria.
I was prompted to join by work colleagues, and whilst I’m not looking forward to sleeping on a cardboard box, I am looking forward to participating….even though, whilst the event is in the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) members, we unfortunately cannot have a kick-to-kick on the hallowed turf (the oval), the bars are closed (which is probably a good thing), and we are subject to the elements, albeit under the cover of the walkways of the MCC.
But filling the glass half full, there are bands, games, and plenty of people to keep us occupied during the night. And, whilst I don’t expect to get a lot of sleep, I do recognize that there are many people in Melbourne who sleep on the streets every night, without the music, without the games, and without the friendly faces…..and they are the ones we need to help.
Sleep at the ‘G has many individuals and companies already signed up. A few examples are the MCC, Melbourne City Mission, Fort Knox, CBA, Maddox, Vic Super, William Buck, OUA…..and the IBM team, which I am part of.
At the time of this blog post, Sleep at the ‘G has raised 22% of the target, so whilst I spread the word, pack my bag, and think about what book to take ……if you would like to help Melbourne City Mission and the great work they do with homeless youths, please sign up to participate, or make a much needed donation.
To donate, go to the Sleep at the ‘G – Team IBM page, select myself, or another of my team members if you prefer, and donate. It doesn’t matter how much, it all counts ….and all donations would be greatly appreciated (and all donations $2 and over are tax-deductible).
Thanks for your support, and for reading my first post.
